Pedestrian Shops and Chaco Sandals Challenge Customers to Help the Boulder Parks & Recreation Foundation Fund Summertime Programs for the Youth Recreation Program

Boulder, Colo., May 19, 2003 - The Pedestrian Shops, Boulder’s oldest comfort-focused shoe store, and Chaco, the Paonia-based, environmentally-conscious footwear company, have partnered with the nonprofit Boulder Parks & Recreation Foundation (BPRF) to enrich summer recreational activities for low-income youth through a retail giving program.

How it works
During the four-week period between May 23 and June 22, 2003, the Pedestrian Shops will offer a $10 discount on all Chaco Sandals. At the same time, Chaco Sandals will donate $10 per pair to the BPRF, for the first 175 pair sold.

The funds raised for BPRF are earmarked to be donated to the Youth Recreation Program, which provides positive recreational opportunities and resources to children from low-income families. This will provide opportunity these children may not otherwise have, including hiking, cycling, playing soccer and swimming -- activities that help expand knowledge, build self-confidence and teach important interpersonal skills.

“Summer is coming and everyone wants to get out and play. But, in Boulder, not everyone realizes that there are loads of kids who can’t afford to participate in everything the area has to offer,” said Richard Polk, Pedestrian Shops owner and BPRF donor and board member. “With this program, we hope to leverage the summer sandal sales to help these kids get out and be kids.

“In addition to helping children, who may otherwise miss out on outdoor activities, team sport, skill building and camaraderie, this program supports the values and mission of all three partners involved,” said Annmarie Jensen, BPRF president.
